A good tactic to kill the ender dragon is to use beds, which will explode when you sleep in them in the nether or the end. Once killed, the ender dragon will drop loads of experience points, and the return portal, made of bedrock, will ignite. On the top of the portal, there will be an ender dragon egg. There is no practical use for this egg.
